Points to Consider When Choosing a College

Step ONE

Ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Do you want to stay in state or go further away from home?
  2. Is a two or four year school better for you?
  3. Do you prefer a public or private institution?
  4. Do you work better in larger or smaller classes?
  5. Would you be happier in a small college town or big city?
  6. Do your college choices have the field of study of your interests?

Write down these answers and use them to narrow down your list of potential schools.

Step TWO

The cost of college is another major consideration. Depending upon your financial situation, decide how you will pay for college.

For example: If you do not qualify for financial aid and cannot pay private school prices, rule out the private schools on your list.

Consider other school-related factors such as athletics and extracurricular activities.

Check out graduation rates. It is better to attend a school with a high graduation percentage.

Step THREE

  • Attend college fairs
  • Speak with your college advisors at your high school
  • Contact the admissions offices at your schools of interest
  • Take campus tours and try to speak to current students on the different campuses
